The Squirrel and the Secret Sprout

Ada the squirrel saved one perfect acorn for a rainy day. She buried it beside the old fence and marked the spot with a small white stone.

Ada, la ardilla, guardó una bellota perfecta para un día de lluvia. La enterró junto a la vieja cerca y marcó el lugar con una piedrita blanca.

Winter came. Snow covered the fence, and Ada ate the other acorns she had stored. When spring arrived, she remembered her special one. She hurried to the white stone, but the acorn was gone.

Llegó el invierno. La nieve cubrió la cerca y Ada comió las otras bellotas que había guardado. Cuando volvió la primavera, recordó aquella tan especial. Corrió hasta la piedra blanca, pero la bellota había desaparecido.

Ada searched beneath every leaf. Then she noticed a tiny green shoot rising from the soil beside the stone. Its two new leaves trembled in the breeze.

Ada buscó bajo cada hoja. Entonces vio un brotecito verde que salía de la tierra junto a la piedra. Sus dos hojas nuevas temblaban con la brisa.

“Were you my acorn?” Ada whispered. The little shoot could not answer, but Ada knew. She fetched water from the stream and poured it gently around the roots.

—¿Eras tú mi bellota? —susurró Ada. El brote no podía responder, pero ella lo sabía. Trajo agua del arroyo y la vertió con cuidado alrededor de las raíces.

Ada had hoped to find a snack. Instead, she found the beginning of a tree that might offer acorns to many squirrels one day.
