The Bear and the Echo

Mara the bear climbed the hill to pick blackberries. “What a lovely day!” she called. From the rocks came a soft reply: “Lovely day!”

Mara, la osita, subió a la colina para recoger moras. —¡Qué día tan bonito! —gritó. Desde las rocas llegó una respuesta suave: —¡Día tan bonito!

Mara looked around. She could not see anyone. “Where are you?” she asked. “Are you?” answered the hill. Mara followed the voice past a pine tree and a patch of heather.

Mara miró a su alrededor. No veía a nadie. —¿Dónde estás? —preguntó. —¿Estás? —respondió la colina. Mara siguió la voz, pasó junto a un pino y atravesó un grupo de brezos.

At the top, she called once more and heard her own words return. It was an echo! Mara laughed so loudly that the hill laughed with her.

En la cima volvió a llamar y oyó regresar sus propias palabras. ¡Era un eco! Mara se rio tan fuerte que la colina pareció reír con ella.

On her way down, she heard a little goat bleating somewhere below. The path split in two, and Mara could not see him. She called his name. His answer bounced off the rocks, showing her which way to go.

Al bajar oyó balar a un cabrito más abajo. El sendero se dividía en dos y Mara no podía verlo. Lo llamó por su nombre. La respuesta rebotó en las rocas y le mostró por dónde ir.

Mara found the goat beside a stream. Together they carried the berries home, and the hill wished them a cheerful goodbye.

Mara encontró al cabrito junto a un arroyo. Llevaron las moras a casa y la colina se despidió alegremente de ellos.
